Joe Mazzulla Named Permanent Head Coach of the Boston Celtics
Historic Success of the Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics hold the record for the most NBA championships won, with 18 titles to their name. Their first championship came in the 1957 NBA Finals under the leadership of head coach Red Auerbach.
Ime Udoka became the 18th head coach in Celtics history in 2021, and under his guidance, the team reached the NBA Finals in 2022. However, he was suspended during the 2022-23 season due to violations of team policies.
Joe Mazzulla's Appointment as Permanent Head Coach
On February 16, 2023, the Boston Celtics announced Joe Mazzulla as their permanent head coach. Mazzulla had previously served as the interim head coach following Udoka's suspension.
Mazzulla played seven seasons in the NBA as a point guard before transitioning to coaching. He joined the Celtics as an assistant coach in 2019 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2021.
Under Mazzulla's leadership as interim head coach, the Celtics posted a 42-17 record and held the best record in the Eastern Conference at the time of his permanent appointment.
