Marcus Rashford's VAR-awarded stoppage-time penalty fired Manchester United into the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals despite a 1-0 second-leg defeat at Atletico Madrid.
Atletico had taken the lead through Renan Lodi's 41st-minute header, but United levelled the tie on aggregate thanks to Anthony Elanga's 80th-minute strike.
With the game seemingly heading for extra time, United were awarded a penalty after Atletico defender Stefan Savic handled the ball in the area. Rashford stepped up and coolly converted the spot-kick to send United through to the last eight.
The win was a major triumph for United manager Ralf Rangnick, who had come under pressure after a disappointing run of results.
"I'm very happy for the players, for the club, for the fans, and for myself," Rangnick said. "We showed great character and resilience tonight.
United will now face either Bayern Munich or Villarreal in the quarter-finals.
