Serbia Draw with Slovenia in EURO 2024 Opener
Injury-Time Goal Earns Serbia a Point
Belgrade, Serbia - June 15, 2024
Serbia scored deep into injury time to earn a 1-1 draw with Slovenia in their opening match of UEFA EURO 2024 on Thursday. Substitute striker Aleksandar Mitrovic headed home a cross from Dusan Tadic in the 94th minute to cancel out Slovenia's first-half opener by Benjamin Sesko.
The result leaves Serbia third in Group B with one point, behind Denmark and England, who each have three points after their respective victories.
Slovenia took the lead in the 24th minute when Sesko latched onto a through ball from Josip Ilicic and slotted it past Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic. Serbia pressed for an equalizer but could not find a way through the Slovenia defense until Mitrovic's late intervention.
It was a dramatic end to a match that had been dominated by Slovenia for long periods. The Slovenians had the better chances and could have won by a more comfortable margin had they taken their chances.
Serbia will now face Denmark in their next match on Sunday, while Slovenia will play England.
