Italian Boxer Angela Carini Abandons Controversial Bout

Algeria's Imane Khelif Advances in Olympics

Carini Says She Was Not Willing to Put Her Health at Risk

Italian boxer Angela Carini has abandoned her welterweight round of 16 bout against Algeria's Imane Khelif after just 46 seconds, citing concerns over her opponent's eligibility and the risk to her own health.

The highly controversial match came to an end after Carini, a two-time Olympian, was visibly distressed and pulled out of the ring. Khelif, who failed a gender eligibility test last year, was allowed to compete after filing an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Carini's decision to withdraw has been met with mixed reactions. Some have praised her for standing up for what she believes in, while others have criticized her for giving up on her Olympic dream.

In a statement after the bout, Carini said: "I am not willing to put my health at risk by fighting someone who has not been properly vetted. I believe that all athletes deserve a fair and safe environment to compete in, and I do not believe that this fight met those standards."

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has launched an investigation into the matter. Khelif's eligibility for the Games is still being disputed, and it remains to be seen whether she will be allowed to continue competing.

This highly contentious boxing match has sparked a wider debate about the issue of transgender athletes in sport. The case of Imane Khelif has raised important questions about fairness, eligibility, and the rights of all athletes.
